Shareholders and Boards of Directors of Providus Bank and Unity Bank unanimously approved a business combination of the two institutions during a court-ordered Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Friday, marking a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s banking sector.
Confiance News gathered that the merger, seen as a vote of confidence in the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) ongoing banking reforms, underscores the sector’s resilience and commitment to fostering economic stability. In a joint statement, the banks expressed gratitude to the CBN for its “foresight, determination, and commitment to building a stronger financial system.” The statement highlighted that the CBN’s support is “shaping healthier banks” and inspiring confidence among businesses, investors, and Nigerians, positioning the financial system as a cornerstone for sustainable growth.
Robust, forward-looking sector
The approval signals to markets, regulators, and the public that Nigeria’s banking industry is adapting to meet the demands of a growing economy. The merger aligns with the CBN’s vision of creating a resilient financial system capable of supporting Nigeria’s ambition to become a trillion-dollar economy.
Growth, market penetration, and operational efficiency
The combined entity will boast a robust Capital Adequacy Ratio, enabling it to compete effectively, expand its reach across the federation, and support businesses, households, and government initiatives. With approximately 230 branches nationwide, the new bank will rank among Nigeria’s largest in terms of branch networks. Unity Bank’s legacy of customer loyalty will merge with Providus Bank’s reputation for innovation and world-class digital banking, creating a powerhouse poised to drive business growth and community prosperity.
Job security, new opportunities
The merger prioritizes safeguarding jobs and creating opportunities within a larger, future-focused institution. The banks emphasized that their success hinges on their people, whose contributions will be protected and celebrated.
“This historic transaction is not simply about numbers; it is about confidence in the Nigeria financial system. By combining Providus Bank and Unity Bank, we are creating an institution of scale and substance—that will give confidence to customers, strength to the financial system and create opportunity for our people,” the statement read.
A vision for the future
The merged bank will embody innovation, customer-centricity, and integrity, supported by enhanced technology platforms and deeper capital strength. Positioned as both a guardian of stability and a catalyst for growth, the institution is set to play a key role in Nigeria’s economic transformation.
