Resident Doctors in Lagos, on Tuesday, organised a special blood donation programme in its effort to boost the blood banks in the state hospitals.
The donation of the blood which is done on voluntarily basis is part of activities to mark the doctors week which was heralded with a scientific conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Speaking to Confiance News correspondent, the Head Of Department (HOD), Hematology, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH/LASUCOM), Dr Adedoyin Owolabi Dosunmu said the exercise organised by Association of Resident Doctors in Lagos State is aimed at mobilising blood donors to meet up with the demand of blood in the hospital as it is done in develop countries.
According to him, the hospital needs a lot of blood to support its operations.
He explained further that all blood donated will undergo proper test and screening before it will be used.
He thanked the resident doctors for turning up for the donation and noted that health facilities are inadequate across the country.
He pointed that the federal government can use the health insurance scheme to encourage people to donate blood annually which will boost blood supply to the hospitals.
“we are ready to increase our blood transfusion,” he said.
Also, the representive of Lagos State blood Transfusion Service, Tope Balogun commended the efforts of the resident doctors for always supporting blood donation and described the doctors’ action as wonderful.
Still on the event, the President of Association of Resident Doctors, Lagos State, Dr Balogun Fatai, who also spoke to the press said the event is a regular programme organised annually and a week long event.
He noted that the association encourage regular screening of doctors and nurses as well asparticipateion in the exercise.
He also applauded the Lagos State command in charge of blood transfusion for their support.
“There’s need for government to create enough awareness to encourage people to donate blood voluntarily without fear which will save lives and also help the donors as well as ease the job of doctors, so every party will benefit from It,” he said.
