History today: Nigeria’s first military head of state, Aguiyi-Ironsi was assassinated

Exactly 57 years ago today, Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, Major Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-ironsi from Ibeku Umuahia in Abia state and many other Army officers were killed in a coup attack of July 29, 1966.

Aguiyi-Ironsi came into power following the 15th January, 1966 coup in Nigeria.
