NCC debunks rumours of tarrif increase

Nigeria’s apex telecommunications regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has dismissed speculations that it has approved an upward review of tariff by January next year.

Commission said there was no truth whatsoever in the speculation, stressing that the procedures for hike in tariff are rigorous, data-driven and evidence-based.

According to a reliable source both at the Ministry of Communications and in the Commission, there have speculations on tariff hike but these are the handiwork of some telecom operators in the past two years, who are trying through the back door to get tariff hike willy-nilly.

The official sources have therefore dismissed the reported approved tariff increases, stressing for now, the NCC does not have a Management Board to approve such a review and cannot be done unilaterally, or through any back door process.

They added that even if a Board is constituted for the Commission, it’s priority would not be to add more pains to Nigeria’s, but to contribute to the solutions.
