The Nigerian Stock Exchange(NSE) All-Share index emerged top performing index among three emerging markets in Africa- Ghana, Egypt and Kenya, at the weekend, Afrinvest report indicated.
An All-Share index is a series of numbers which shows the changing average value of the share prices of all companies on a stock exchange and is used as a measure of how well a market is performing.
More so, Emerging markets are countries with low income and high growth prospects.
“Nigeria’s All Share Index emerged top performer, up 5.0 per cent W-o-W, following buying interest in large and mid-cap stocks,” Afrinvest report disclosed.
Recall that in the preceding week(June 1, 2018), NSE’s All Share Index led laggards in the group- Ghana, Egypt and Kenya, declining 6.4 per cent lower, on the back of sustained selloffs by local investors in a week where all the indices of the markets under review recorded downward movements.
The report further showed that Ghana’s GSE Composite led laggards, down 4.8 per cent Week on Week (W-o-W), much more than the 3.1 per cent it shed in the prior week, due to sustained profit taking.
Egypt’s EGX 30 trailed, shedding 3.0 per cent W-o-W as a result of sell-offs by domestic and foreign investors.
However, Kenya’s NSE 20 inched 0.6 per cent higher, as Kenyan shilling appreciated against the dollar.
Although Nigeria’s All-Share index topped the group, Analysts believe that the trend may not be sustained on the heels of sustained profit-taking.
