The independence message shared by Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Oleksii Reznikov, has sparked reactions as tweeps think it is not worth celebrating because of the current state of the country.

Reznikov took to his Twitter handle to share his congratulatory message with fellow Ukrainians, commending their doggedness in protecting the freedom of the country.

He said, “Today, Ukraine is celebrating Independence Day, the most important day of the year for all Ukrainians. Now more than ever we recognize that Ukraine’s independence is the inevitable outcome of the struggle of many generations who fought for our freedom. And in our time, the duty has fallen on us to protect that freedom. However difficult our struggle may be, we are unequivocal in our conviction that our freedom can never be taken from us, for it is deeply rooted in our history, tradition, and in the sacrifices of those who came before us.

Today, the whole civilized world is helping to safeguard our independence. Let us proclaim together –

Glory to Ukraine!

Glory to the Heroes!.”

This message, however, did not go well with most tweeps, who trooped to his comment section to express themselves.

Reacting, Hans19668 said: “An independence day without independence.”

Corroborating, Opus Hustler said:

“They’re not independent, so what are they celebrating? Foreign aid is keeping that corrupt “nation” afloat.”

Although some of the tweeps were not support of the celebration, others felicitated with Ukraine.

“Happy Independence Day Ukraine!,” Jake Broe said.

Similarly, DrCharyton,”Yes! Happy Independence Day! Freedom is not free! Ukrainians have suffered so much for so many years! When I am President 🇺🇸. I will stop the bloodshed and keep one Independent Ukraine🇺🇦. God bless us all.”

Confiance News learnt that Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe that borders Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova, which became an independent republic in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

However, since April 2014, the country has been at war with Russia shortly after the later annexed Crimea, a peninsula in southern Ukraine, following a controversial referendum.
