Bonny Island is set for a major tourism push as the Bonny Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture prepares to launch Discover Bonny, a three year strategic plan to transform the island into a premier tourism destination.

‎Confiance News gathered that the initiative will be formally unveiled at the Bonny Island Tourism & Investment Summit 2026, holding from August 18 to 20, 2026.

‎According to details sighted by Confiance News, the Summit will bring together government officials, investors, tourism experts and community leaders, with an address expected from the Chamber’s President, Mrs. Constance Nwokejiobi.

‎It was learned that Discover Bonny will rest on four pillars: a Tourism Concierge Platform, a tiered Partnership Framework spanning Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, Community and International categories, and a privately anchored Tourism Centre designed to outlast any single administration.

‎The Chamber disclosed that Bonny Local Government Area already contributes an estimated 4% of Nigeria’s national GDP, largely from oil and gas, and said the new initiative is aimed at building tourism, heritage and hospitality into a second sustainable economic pillar for the area.

‎Confiance News confirmed that NLNG and Renaissance Africa Energy have been named Tier 1 partners funding the programme. The two companies reportedly sponsored the rebuilding of the New Bonny Consulate Building, which now houses the Royal Embassy of King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple III, complete with a museum, a library and a 60 seater cinema.

‎It was further gathered that the Chamber has submitted a full portfolio of Bonny’s heritage sites and tourism products to the Federal Ministry of Tourism and the Nigeria Tourism Development Authority for national endorsement. The list includes the Perekule Royal Palace, St Stephens Cathedral, Finima Beach, Finima Nature Park, the Old Market Square and the Commonwealth Cemetery, alongside cultural products such as the Okoloama Fungumini Festival, the Bonny Boat Regatta, the Bonny Island Marathon and the Ukemkpa Festival.

‎Improved connectivity to the island was also highlighted. The Bonny-Bodo Road, which was temporarily opened in December 2025, linked Bonny to the Nigerian mainland by road for the first time in about 600 years, completing three gateways to the island by road, air and sea.

‎Confiance News understands that the Chamber has also drawn early Caribbean investment interest through Afreximbank’s support for a Caribbean tourism corridor, alongside engagement with CAIPA, which represents 25 Caribbean nations.
