Lagos confab to review banking recapitalisation, tax reform, fintech gains
Nigeria’s leading financial regulators, banking chiefs, fintech innovators and capital market operators will converge on Lagos this September for the Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria’s (FICAN) 36th Anniversary Annual Conference, Confiance News has learned.
The two-day conference, scheduled for September 19 and 20, 2026, will hold at Orchid Hotels, Dreamworld Africana Way, Lekki, under the theme “Building on the Gains of Recapitalisation, Tax Reform and Fintech Revolution.”
CBN deputy governor to deliver keynote address
Dr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi, Deputy Governor for Corporate Services at the Central Bank of Nigeria, will deliver the keynote address, it was gathered. Dr. Oliver Alawuba, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of United Bank for Africa, is billed as guest speaker.
Panel sessions will draw representatives from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System, the Fintech Association of Nigeria, Opay Digital Services Limited, Providus Bank and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, according to details obtained by Confiance News. The panels are expected to interrogate sub-themes tied to banking recapitalisation, tax reforms and fintech expansion.
Conference comes at defining moment, says FICAN chairman
FICAN Chairman Chima Titus Nwokoji described the gathering as a strategic platform for reviewing ongoing reforms and charting a path forward.
”This year’s conference comes at a defining moment for Nigeria’s economy,” Nwokoji said, noting that banking recapitalisation, tax reforms and fintech growth are reshaping the financial services sector. He added that the conference aims to bring policymakers, regulators and industry leaders together to assess progress and shape recommendations for stability, inclusive growth and investor confidence.
Confiance News gathered that FICAN, which comprises about 150 journalists and editors covering the financial sector across print, broadcast and online platforms, has for 36 years championed responsible financial journalism and informed public discourse on economic policy.
Sessions to cover digital payments, financial inclusion, market reforms
The programme will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions and interactive sessions with experts from banking, insurance, capital markets, fintech and government, it was confirmed. Discussions will span the rollout of the banking recapitalisation programme, the effects of Nigeria’s new tax regime, fintech’s evolution, digital payments, financial inclusion, capital market development, insurance penetration, foreign investment and long-term economic resilience.
Communiqué expected with recommendations for regulators
FICAN said the conference will culminate in a communiqué containing recommendations for government, regulators and industry players on sustaining reforms, drawing investment and deepening financial inclusion, Confiance News understands. Organisers also positioned the event as a networking forum linking policymakers, regulators, investors, corporate executives, development partners and media professionals.
Sources close to the association said Nigeria stands at a pivotal point in its economic transformation, with reforms across banking, taxation and macroeconomic management generating fresh opportunities alongside new policy challenges.
The FICAN Annual Conference has, over the decades, grown into one of Nigeria’s foremost platforms for high-level dialogue on the financial system and the broader economy.
