Following the success of its Walk4ZeroPlastic in Lagos, The Alternative Bank (AltBank) is taking its fight against plastic pollution to Abuja and Kano, two of Nigeria’s largest cities grappling with escalating waste challenges. The initiative, aimed at fostering collective action, seeks to curb the environmental and health threats posed by plastic pollution through symbolic walks and clean-up activities.
The Bank told Confiance News in a statement on Friday.
On September 27, 2025, Abuja’s event will start at Yoruba Mosque and end at Wuse Market, while Kano’s walk is set for October 4, 2025, engaging residents in key markets. Both events will promote sustainable waste management and responsible consumption, rallying communities to act. “Plastic pollution is choking our cities, but together, we can turn the tide,” said Garba Mohammed, AltBank’s Executive Director (North). “This is a call to every Nigerian to take responsibility.”
The Lagos walk mobilized over 300 participants, including volunteers and officials, earning praise from the Lagos State Ministry of Environment. The Abuja and Kano extensions, partnered with the Federal Ministry of Environment, Kano State Ministry of Environment, and others like Sterling One Foundation, aim to replicate this impact. The campaign emphasizes community-driven solutions to Nigeria’s environmental crisis.
AltBank’s Walk4ZeroPlastic underscores its commitment to sustainability, raising awareness about plastic waste’s devastating effects and encouraging long-term behavioral change. By collaborating with market leaders, government agencies, and local organizations, the bank is fostering a cleaner, safer Nigeria. The initiative aligns with AltBank’s broader mission, rooted in its non-interest banking ethos since receiving its standalone license in July 2023. As plastic pollution threatens livelihoods and ecosystems, AltBank’s efforts highlight the power of collective action in building a sustainable future.
