Mastercard has strengthened its collaboration with Smile ID, a leading African identity verification provider, to accelerate the deployment of robust digital identity solutions throughout the continent.

Confiance News gathered from a statement issued by the Senior Account Manager, New Business, Yemi Kuti at the weekend.

This partnership aims to streamline customer onboarding for banks, fintechs, mobile money operators, and other businesses, reducing identity fraud while broadening access to financial services. By integrating Mastercard’s global insights and Identity technology with Smile ID’s data verification and fraud detection tools, the collaboration addresses critical needs in Africa’s growing digital economy.

Tackling fraud, promoting inclusion
With Africa’s digital economy expected to reach $1.5 trillion by 2030, secure identity solutions are vital for fostering financial inclusion, preventing fraud, and enabling cross-border commerce. Rising smartphone penetration underscores the need for accessible, secure identity verification to unlock opportunities for millions across digital platforms.

Mastercard, with over 50 years of collaboration with African governments, businesses, and communities, is committed to advancing financial inclusion and economic growth. Together with Smile ID, Mastercard is well-equipped to tackle these challenges, supporting compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations across the continent.

As part of the agreement, Mastercard has taken a minority stake in Smile ID, signaling its long-term dedication to digital inclusion and innovation in Africa. “This partnership with Smile ID is a pivotal step in advancing digital trust and inclusion across Africa. As fragmented identity systems slow down businesses and lock millions out of the digital economy, Smile ID’s innovative identity platform complements Mastercard’s commitment to fostering secure and inclusive digital ecosystems,” said Selin Bahadirli, Executive Vice President, Services, Mastercard EEMEA.

Confiance News learnt that the partnership enables Mastercard’s clients—banks, telecoms, mobile money providers, and fintechs—to access Smile ID’s advanced verification tools, integrated into Mastercard’s digital platforms. These tools facilitate:

Rapid, secure user onboarding across African markets.

-Advanced fraud detection, including synthetic identity fraud prevention.

-Compliance with local and international KYC/AML standards.

-Scalable solutions for cross-border commerce and digital growth.

Smile ID’s integrations with local governments and trusted data sources provide unique capabilities, such as pan-African coverage, near real-time onboarding, and synergy with Mastercard’s insights.

“The surge in synthetic identity fraud in Africa is costing banks and lenders hundreds of millions of dollars a year,” said Mark Straub, CEO of Smile ID. “By joining forces with Mastercard, we can help turn the tide. As we combine insights and technologies, we can expand opportunities for consumers by giving banks and mobile wallets the confidence to onboard the next 300 million African users securely, in seconds.”
