CWPPF says officers destroyed journalist’s phone during Wednesday operation in Abuja
A Nigerian journalist was allegedly flogged twice by police officers attached to the Lugbe Division in Abuja after attempting to document a demolition exercise, Confiance News has learned.
The Coalition for Whistleblower Protection and Press Freedom (CWPPF) said in a statement obtained by Confiance News that Sunday Michael Ogwu, Editor of Pinnacle Daily, was assaulted with an electric cable by police operatives working alongside members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) on August 19.
According to details gathered by Confiance News, Ogwu was surrounded and ordered into a patrol van after officers seized his phone during a joint demolition operation at Lugbe Federal Housing Estate. When he refused, citing his profession, he was flogged on the instruction of the officer in charge.
Confiance News further learned that after his phone was returned, Ogwu was assaulted a second time when he attempted to record the incident again, with the officer allegedly declaring the first beating “was not enough.” He sustained injuries and his phone was severely damaged.
CWPPF, which includes Premium Times, the ICIR, NUJ, and SERAP among its members, has demanded a transparent investigation, compensation for Ogwu, a public apology, and an end to police harassment of journalists across the FCT.
