Zenith Bank and UBA powered a wave of investor activity on the Nigerian Exchange last week, cementing banking as the dominant force on the bourse’s premium segment. ‎ ‎

Data obtained by Confiance News shows that banking stocks on the NGX Premium Board generated a combined turnover of N24.3 billion between August 24 and August 28, 2026, led by Zenith Bank Plc and United Bank for Africa Plc. ‎ ‎Zenith Bank recorded 12,851 deals involving over 151.4 million shares valued at approximately N17.96 billion, closing at N121.00 per share. UBA followed closely with 4,944 deals and a turnover of N6.34 billion, trading at N45.90 per share. ‎ ‎

Combined with strong showings from Access Holdings and First HoldCo, the financial services sector overwhelmingly dominated trading activity across both the Premium and Main boards, underscoring sustained investor confidence in Nigeria’s banking sector amid the current market cycle. ‎ ‎

What it means for investors

‎Financial services alone accounted for over 44% of total equity turnover on the exchange for the week, making bank stocks the most liquid and closely watched names on the NGX. This concentration signals where institutional money is flowing, but also means broad market indices are highly sensitive to banking sector policy, including CBN interest rate decisions and capital requirements.

What it means for the economy

‎Sustained turnover in tier-one banks reflects confidence in the sector’s role as the backbone of credit creation, forex intermediation, and government securities financing, all critical to Nigeria’s broader growth outlook.
