‎On September 4, 2025, Rwanda made history by launching Africa’s first public flight of a self-flying electric air taxi, the EHang EH216-S, during the Aviation Africa Summit in Kigali. This pilotless electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, developed in partnership with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and EHang, marks a significant leap in advanced air mobility (AAM) for the continent.

‎Rwanda’s demonstration, witnessed by President Paul Kagame, positions the country as a hub for innovative aviation, building on its drone delivery success.

‎For Nigeria and Africa, this milestone offers a blueprint for addressing urban congestion and enhancing connectivity. Nigeria, with its sprawling cities like Lagos, could adopt eVTOLs to reduce traffic gridlock and improve transport efficiency, fostering economic growth through sustainable solutions. Across Africa, the technology promises to connect remote areas, making air travel more accessible and affordable, as highlighted by RwandAir CEO Yvonne Makolo.

‎Globally, Rwanda’s achievement signals Africa’s entry into the AAM market, attracting investment and inspiring regulatory frameworks. By pioneering this technology, Rwanda challenges high operational costs and infrastructure gaps, setting a model for sustainable urban mobility worldwide.
