How safe is aluminium foil for cooking

Foil, or aluminum foil, is a common household product that’s often used in cooking. Some people claim that using foil in cooking can cause aluminum to leach into your food and put your health at risk. However, others say it’s entirely safe to use.

According to Healthline, aluminum foil is generally safe to use in cooking, as only a tiny amount of the aluminum you ingest is actually absorbed by your body. The rest is passed in your feces or urine. Furthermore, in healthy people, absorbed aluminum is later excreted in your urine.

Confiance News gathered that there are some precautions you should take when using foil in cooking, such as:

– Avoid wrapping acidic foods, such as tomatoes, citrus fruits, or spices, in foil. These foods can react with the aluminum and erode the foil, leaving harmful residues in your food.

– Avoid using foil in high-heat cooking applications, such as grilling or roasting. High temperatures can increase the leaching of aluminum into food.

– Use heavy-duty foil for grilling and roasting, as it is thicker and more resistant than regular foil.

– Use non-stick foil for sticky foods, such as cheese or honey. Non-stick foil has a special coating that prevents food from sticking to it. However, you should use the dull side of the foil, as the shiny side contains the non-stick coating that can peel off if heated.

To summarize, foil is safe to use for food storage and moderate-heat cooking, as long as you avoid contact with acidic or sticky foods.
