The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), led by Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Dr. Aminu Maida, launched the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Africa-BroadBand (BB) Maps initiative in Abuja.

Confiance News gathered that Nigeria is the first of 11 Sub-Saharan countries to kick off this transformative project.

Funded by the European Union (EU), the initiative aims to establish harmonized national broadband mapping systems to bridge the digital divide and foster digital transformation across the continent.

The Africa-BB-Maps project focuses on creating accurate broadband infrastructure maps to identify unserved and underserved communities, enabling data-driven planning and targeted investments.

Dr. Maida hailed the initiative as a critical step toward achieving Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan targets, emphasizing its role in delivering digital services to all Nigerians, regardless of location-media.

The launch event, held at the Transcorp Hilton, brought together government officials, telecom operators, and international partners, including the ITU and EU, to collaborate on strategies for broadband mapping and digital inclusion. By leading this effort, Nigeria positions itself as a digital infrastructure pioneer in Africa, driving economic growth and connectivity.
