What is teleportation?
Imagine a world where humans or objects can be transported without relying on cars, trains, ships, or aeroplanes. Teleportation offers this possibility. It involves moving objects instantly from one place to another without travelling through the intervening space. Popularised by science fiction, teleportation holds transformative potential if realised. The ability to instantly transport people or objects from one location to another would revolutionise many aspects of human life, providing benefits across various domains.
How beneficial is it?
Teleportation would significantly reduce travel time. Today, long-distance travel can take hours or even days, consuming precious time and resources. Teleportation could replace traditional transportation methods, enabling people to cover vast distances instantly. This would boost productivity, allowing more time for meaningful activities instead of commuting. Business travel, in particular, would become more efficient, promoting global collaboration and economic growth.
Environmental benefits are another key advantage of teleportation. Conventional transportation methods, such as cars, planes, and ships, significantly contribute to carbon emissions and environmental damage. Teleportation would reduce reliance on fossil fuels, leading to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. This shift could be crucial in combating climate change and preserving the planet for future generations.
In critical situations, the ability to teleport medical professionals, equipment, or patients instantly could save countless lives. Patients needing urgent medical attention could be transported directly to specialised healthcare facilities, ensuring timely treatment. Similarly, disaster response teams could be deployed instantly to affected areas, providing rapid assistance and mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
Socially, teleportation could strengthen global connections. Families and friends separated by vast distances could visit each other more frequently, enhancing personal relationships and cultural exchange. This ease of movement could also boost tourism, allowing individuals to explore diverse cultures and landscapes effortlessly.
Is it achievable?
Despite attempts by scientists towards actualizing the feat, they are still faced with limitations. For instance, teleporting a person would require measuring and recording every particle’s position, motion, and energy in their body.
According to an article titled, “Teleportation just got easier- but not for you, unfortunately” written by Ben Buchler, a professor at the Australian National University (ANU), he said that the data storage needed for this is immense—around 10^22 gigabytes (a stack of hard drives 20 light-years tall).
Hence, the teleportation of objects, including humans, has not been achieved due to the immense complexity and energy demands.
Although quantum teleportation, which involves the transfer of information about the quantum state of a particle from one location to another other than the physical movement of matter is in the works, it requires the measurement and recording of the complete state of the particle (position, velocity, energy) without violating the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.
While teleportation remains a theoretical concept, its potential benefits are immense. As research and technological advancements continue, better technology and new approaches are necessary for human teleportation to become a reality.
