‎The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is establishing an office in Abuja, making Nigeria one of only seven countries worldwide to host such a presence, a development that signals growing international recognition of the country’s expanding role as an innovation and digital economy powerhouse.

‎Confiance News gathered this from the official X handle of Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani.

‎The announcement followed a high-level meeting between Minister Tijani and WIPO Director-General Daren Tang, who visited the minister’s office alongside a delegation. The visit built on earlier conversations held during the Ministerial Summit on the sidelines of the ITU Council, underscoring the sustained momentum behind Nigeria-WIPO engagement.

‎At the centre of their discussions was the strengthening of Nigeria’s intellectual property ecosystem, with both parties exploring how IP frameworks can drive economic empowerment for technology entrepreneurs, innovators, content creators, and young digital talent across the country.

‎”Intellectual property can serve as a powerful tool for economic empowerment,” Tijani stated, pointing to the untapped creative and entrepreneurial potential of Nigerians as a key driver of the collaboration.

‎The WIPO office in Abuja is expected to expand access to intellectual property awareness and protection services, bringing critical resources closer to grassroots innovators and small business owners who have historically lacked access to formal IP structures.

‎For a country whose technology and creative sectors have grown rapidly in recent years, the development marks a strategic milestone. Nigeria now joins an exclusive group of nations with direct WIPO institutional presence, positioning itself more firmly as Africa’s leading destination for innovation, technology investment, and digital transformation.
