Confiance News learnt that this was the provocative opening of a powerful sermon delivered by Pastor Jerry Eze of Streams of Joy International, a message that sent social media into a frenzy and left congregants rethinking how divine help truly works.
Pastor Eze, founder of the fast-growing Streams of Joy International and one of Nigeria’s most-followed televangelists, delivered a layered teaching on the nature and dynamics of God’s help, drawing from the biblical account of Naaman, the Syrian military commander who was healed of leprosy through the counsel of a captive Israelite servant girl.
God’s help is measured by His power, not yours
Central to the message was a reframing of how believers understand divine assistance. “When God helps a man, He helps you not according to your capacity but according to His capabilities,” Pastor Eze declared, adding that “the help of God in your life is an agitation in hell.”
He went on to distinguish between resource-based help and instruction-based help, arguing that most of what God provides comes not in the form of money or material, but in the form of divine direction. “Most of the help God has given to men is not contained in resources but in instructions,” he said.
Hard seasons are part of the help
Pastor Eze offered a pastoral reframe to those in difficult seasons, insisting that painful experiences can be part of God’s process rather than evidence of His absence. “The help of God will first bring you into stature before it comes. The experiences you are having that do not feel good to you are part of the help, because He is preparing you for the real thing,” he said.
He also noted that divine help frequently comes through separation, citing the story of Abraham as a model. “Most often than not, when God wants to help a man, He separates that man, just like He did with Abraham.” This isolation, he argued, is not abandonment but divine positioning.
Adding a broader generational dimension, the clergyman said God’s help rarely stops at the individual. “One of the major dynamics of God’s help is that it is transgenerational. It extends to the upcoming generations,” he stated.
Even your enemies will be compelled to help you
In one of the sermon’s most quoted lines, Pastor Eze assured his audience that divine favour overrides human hatred. “It doesn’t matter who hates you, but when God decides to help you, they will help you. Even if they don’t like your face, they will like your name,” he said.
He also offered a litmus test for identifying spiritual momentum: “Some of the times you may not know what God is doing, but the attacks will give you an idea.” He suggested that intensifying opposition is often a signal of approaching breakthrough.
The captive girl who carried the key to a General’s healing
Pastor Eze spent considerable time on the story of the unnamed Israelite servant girl who told Naaman, the Syrian military commander, about the prophet Elisha’s ability to heal his leprosy. The detail that she was a product of war, taken as a captive from her homeland, was central to his teaching.
”The slave girl and little maid that told Naaman about a prophet in Israel who would cure him of his leprosy, do not forget that she is a product of war,” he said. He used her story to illustrate that God can deploy help through the most unlikely and overlooked vessels, including those society considers marginalised or insignificant.
Addressing why Naaman’s wife and household trusted the girl’s counsel, Pastor Eze pointed to her character. “Why did her mistress and boss believe her? It is because she exhibits the character of a child of God. Even as a slave in a foreign land, she did not deny or hide her identity as a child of God.” The lesson, he stressed, was that integrity in obscurity builds credibility that opens extraordinary doors.
Why God uses the ordinary to confound the wise
Referring to Naaman’s instruction to wash in the Jordan River, a body of water the general initially despised, Pastor Eze drew out a consistent principle in scripture: God tends to work through means that appear foolish or inadequate by human standards.
”When God decides to help a man, why use Jordan? It may not look nice, but God will help you there and clean you there,” he said. “Because He wants to use the foolish things of this world to confound the wise.”
He also issued a pointed caution about proximity versus possession. “Proximity to the oil does not mean you have the oil. You might be close to it but you may not have access to it,” he warned, urging his audience not to assume that association with anointing translates to personal possession of it.
