‎The United Nations Resident Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the reported killing of more than 50 civilians in Darajamal Village, Bama Local Government Area, Borno State, on September 5, 2025.

He told Confiance News in a statement on Monday.

‎“I am deeply appalled and saddened by Friday’s reported killing of dozens of civilians in Darajamal Village,” Fall said in a statement. “Civilians should never be a target!”

‎According to preliminary reports, suspected members of a non-state armed group attacked the village, killing over 50 people, abducting an unknown number, and injuring others who fled. At least 28 houses were reportedly burned during the assault, with the casualty count expected to rise as more details emerge.

‎Fall extended condolences on behalf of the United Nations in Nigeria, stating, “I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed and those affected, and to the Government and the people of Borno State and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

‎He urged security authorities to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure swift justice, adding, “I also call for the immediate release of all those abducted.”

‎The attack is part of a surge in violence in Borno State this year, with hundreds of civilians killed in targeted attacks on communities, internally displaced persons camps, and through tactics like improvised explosive devices and suicide bombings. Similar deadly incidents have also been reported in neighboring Adamawa and Yobe states, targeting rural health centers, grain stores, and markets.

‎“I reiterate my call to parties to the conflict to protect civilians as well as their property and to adhere to international humanitarian and human rights law,” Fall emphasized.

‎The United Nations reaffirmed its commitment to supporting conflict-affected communities in Nigeria, complementing government efforts to address the crisis.
