The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has opened entries for the 10th edition of its National Undergraduate Essay Competition, an annual initiative that has become a launchpad for young Nigerians eager to shape the country’s energy future, Confiance News has learned.

‎Entries for this year’s competition open on August 15, with the Board inviting 100 and 200 level students from Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education to submit essays on strengthening local content development in the oil and gas sector.

‎According to a press statement sighted by Confiance News and signed by Obinna Ezeobi, PhD, General Manager of the Corporate Communications Division, this year’s essay topic is “Promoting Manufacturing for Sustainable Local Content Development.” The theme pushes students to interrogate how Nigeria can deepen its local manufacturing capacity, drive economic growth and cut down on import dependence within the energy industry.

‎Beyond the prizes on offer, the competition has steadily grown into a platform for sharpening critical thinking, research and innovation among Nigerian undergraduates. It is designed to nudge students beyond classroom theory toward practical ideas that support the country’s industrialisation and sustainable development goals.

‎Confiance News gathered that the competition is coordinated by Eyinimi Omorozi, Managing Director and Project Consultant, who noted in the statement that the initiative is structured to sharpen students’ research abilities while equipping them with skills relevant to Nigeria’s energy sector.

‎Interested students can submit their entries through the competition portal at www.ncdmbessay.ng once the application window officially opens on August 15.

‎The competition will reach its climax with an award ceremony scheduled for October 22 at the NCDMB headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where top-performing participants will be honoured for their intellectual contributions.

‎Confiance News understands that over the past decade, the NCDMB Annual National Undergraduate Essay Competition has evolved into one of Nigeria’s leading academic outreach initiatives, drawing young scholars into national development conversations and encouraging practical solutions that strengthen local content and economic resilience.
