Good Friday is called “Good” because it’s a day that commemorates something profoundly significant for Christians: the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, which led to His resurrection and the salvation of mankind.

The term “Good” is often interpreted to mean holy or sacred. Historically, the adjective “good” in this context refers to a day or season observed as holy by the church.

Different theories exist about the origin of the name. Some suggest that “Good Friday” may have been derived from “God’s Friday,” while others believe it is a corruption of “God’s Friday.”

The Oxford English Dictionary notes that the term traditionally designates a day on which religious observance is held. The Catholic Encyclopedia mentions that the term’s origins are not clear, but it could be a translation of the German word “Gottes Freitag” (God’s Friday) or “Gute Freitag” (Good Friday).

Regardless of its etymology, Good Friday is a central event in Christianity that is observed with solemnity and reverence, reflecting on the sacrifice that Christians believe Jesus made for humanity.
